We wrote about the matter on December 1 this year. In August Eugeniusz Michalak, a resident of Spółdzielcza Street, heard from one of the female officials that a large parking lot for nearly 90 cars was to be built in the area between Buczka and Spółdzielcza Streets. The two asphalt sports courts were to be demolished.
Earlier, Mr. Eugeniusz had written to the city hall asking for a basketball hoop, a goal and a lighting pole to be installed. “Children are mentioned in the context of drug addiction, alcohol problems and hooliganism,” said the Bolesławiec resident. “But above all, they need something to do. They need somewhere to play. Thanks to this, they will certainly engage in less hooliganism.”
In one of his subsequent letters, he asked the mayor to look after children and young people. “The courts on the square are asphalted. It is enough to modernize them and enclose them with a wire fence,” he explained. “Parents want their children to play near home, not on another street.”
“Besides, these two matters can be reconciled,” Mr. Eugeniusz argued. “After all, both a parking lot and a sports court could be built here. The parking lot could be somewhat smaller, with space for 60 cars.”
The Bolesławiec resident collected approximately 120 signatures for an appeal to include in the planned investment “a place for rest, recreation and meetings of the local community.” On Thursday, December 3, public consultations on the matter were held in the Council Chamber. More than 40 residents of Spółdzielcza and Buczka Streets attended the meeting.
The parties reached an agreement. “The officials gave in a little. And we also softened our position somewhat,” says Eugeniusz Michalak. “The compromise arrangements are as follows: we will redesign the parking lot so that a mini sports court can also be built there,” emphasizes Wiesław Ogrodnik, deputy mayor of Bolesławiec. It may be possible to design the court so that it can be used by basketball and football enthusiasts. What is more, the table tennis table will not disappear from the square between Buczka and Spółdzielcza Streets.
“The mayor did not specify when this investment will be carried out,” Ogrodnik points out. “The chances of it happening next year are slim,” he adds. Construction of the parking lot and mini sports court will probably begin in 2011.
