This is the only legal instrument that explains so precisely what violence is, what to do when it occurs and how to prevent it. Dr Sylwia Spurek – a lawyer, legal counsel, legislator and feminist. She has been involved in work for human rights for 21 years. She is the author of the first Polish draft law on preventing domestic violence. In 2014–2015, she coordinated the government process of ratifying the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence. From 2015 to 2019, she was Deputy Commissioner for Human Rights. She is currently a Member of the European Parliament, Vice-Chair of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM) and a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE). She is the author of several dozen publications on domestic violence, equal treatment and discrimination. She is vegan and also works for animal rights. Together with her partner, Dr Marcin Anaszewicz, she published the book “Civil Partnership. Conversations about Poland” in 2019, on human rights, violence against women, animal rights and climate issues.
