Modern can also describe an interior furnished in a minimalist style or arranged in a rather uncommon way. What can be found in modern single-storey detached-house designs?
Open living space
When browsing modern single-storey house designs, the first thing that certainly catches the eye is the open living space. Here, the living room, lounge and kitchen are essentially one and the same room. To maintain an appropriate layout, the kitchen area is usually separated from the living room, for example with an island or other furniture. However, there is no wall, as is so often found in older buildings.
The open space is where all family members usually spend most of their time. It is where they can calmly watch television after a hard day, eat a hot dinner or have a drink with a friend who comes to visit. At the same time, private rooms—simply the bedrooms—remain closed behind doors. This is a great convenience, especially when children live in the house. No one should be surprised that young children can create a mess at an exceptional pace. When all their toys, clothes, unmade bed and scattered puzzles remain shut away in the bedroom, the living room is still a place where guests can be invited without apologising for the mess, which is, after all, completely normal with a small child.
Connecting the interior of the house with the garden
Modern single-storey house designs mean saying a complete goodbye to heavy, massive patio or balcony doors and poorly lit rooms. Large windows and bright, natural light reign here, entering every room throughout the house without restriction. In modern designs, particularly single-storey ones, the living room is very often virtually connected to the garden. They are usually separated by large glass doors, which remain open in summer when temperatures outside are high. In winter, when the frost in the garden is not welcome in the living room, the glazed doors leading outside provide a beautiful view of the snow-covered yard.
When designing a house with a garden, it is usually recommended that the garden be at least partially screened from the road by the building. If a playground, swimming pool or several vegetable beds are planned right next to a busy street, it is difficult to expect any privacy. A garden located behind the house is a great place to spend lazy hours on sunny days or enjoy an evening swim in the pool.
Elegance Lies in the Simplicity of the Finishes
It is often believed that modern designs are primarily about minimalism and simple finishes. Of course, modern architecture and interior arrangements are much broader concepts, including, for example, an unconventional approach to room layouts or the organisation of space in the home. It is true, however, that modern interiors are usually exceptionally neat and orderly, while also being cosy and elegant. They feature plenty of natural wood, light colours and raw textures. The simple, geometric character of the furniture, together with the subdued colours of the interiors and accessories, creates a neat-looking home that surprises with its simplicity and, at the same time, its functionality.
