On the anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, beneath the monument commemorating the 100th anniversary of Poland regaining independence, Bolesławiec County Head Tomasz Gabrysiak, Deputy Mayor of Bolesławiec Iwona Mandżuk-Dudek and the Commander of the 23rd Silesian Artillery Regiment, accompanied by soldiers of the 23rd SAR and scouts from the ZHP troop in Bolesławiec, laid flowers in honor and memory of those who died defending the country.

This year, the traditional ceremonies were canceled because of the epidemic. However, we must not forget those who fought for a free Poland.

During the September Campaign, 66,000 Poles died in battles against Germany, 134,000 were wounded, and 420,000 were taken prisoner. In the fighting against the Red Army, several thousand Polish soldiers were killed—mostly executed after being taken prisoner—or wounded; approximately 250,000 were taken prisoner. The Germans suffered approximately 45,000 dead and wounded, while the Red Army, according to data from the authorities of the former USSR, suffered approximately 2,500 dead and wounded.
