The accident occurred early in the morning on the motorway near the economic zone, next to Szczytnica, on the carriageway towards Olszyna. A lorry carrying 170 head of cattle crashed into three lorries and two passenger cars that had stopped at the side of the motorway to let an oversized vehicle pass. The driver probably did not notice that the vehicles were stationary. As soon as he realised that he would not be able to stop in time, he tried to squeeze between the cars so that the damage would be as limited as possible.
Two people suffered minor injuries in the accident. Three animals did not survive the collision, and one was sent for slaughter. The motorway will be blocked until at least 12:00.
Update 2009-10-19 16:06
The lorry driver, a 45-year-old resident of Zduńska Wola (Łódź Voivodeship), was charged with unintentionally causing a road disaster. He faces up to five years in prison.
