The Zielona Góra branch of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways has announced a tender for the project “Construction of the A18 Olszyna–Golnice motorway (reconstruction of the southern carriageway), section 4 from km 50+000 to km 71+533.”

The final section awaiting the selection of a contractor begins at the Lubusz Voivodeship boundary (before the Luboszów interchange—the exit to Osiecznica and Świętoszów) and ends at the Golnice road interchange (DW 297 Bolesławiec–Szprotawa–Nowa Sól). This means that contracts have either already been signed for the entire right-hand carriageway of DK18 from Olszyna to Golnice (sections 1 and 2), or tenders have been announced (sections 3 and 4).

Bids will be opened at the beginning of August. The project is expected to take more than two years, with breaks during the winter.

GDDKiA on the project

What will the contractor be responsible for?

The contractor will be responsible for reconstructing the southern carriageway of national road no. 18 and its surroundings. The project includes demolishing the existing 9.50-metre-wide concrete southern carriageway and constructing a new concrete surface 11 metres wide. It also includes the reconstruction of two interchanges (Luboszów and Golnice), as well as the construction of acceleration and deceleration lanes for entrances to and exits from the Świętoszów Południe rest area. We also plan to equip the A18 motorway with all necessary environmental protection features, including wildlife overpasses. The project will be carried out under the “Build” formula.

Project completion time

The time allocated for completing the works and obtaining the occupancy permit is 25 months. The winter periods, lasting from 16 December to 15 March and counted as three months, are not included in the time allocated for the works. Completion of the works is planned for 2023.

Purpose of the contract

The main objective of the project is to improve road safety and driving comfort and to bring national road no. 18 (on the more than 70-kilometre Olszyna–Golnice section) up to the standards of a road network with motorway parameters.

The project is divided into the following implementation sections:

  • from the state border to km 11.86 (two kilometres beyond the Żary Zachód interchange towards Wrocław)—completion of the works is planned for the second half of 2023.
  • from km 11.86 (one kilometre beyond the Żary Zachód interchange towards Wrocław) to km 33.76 (4 km before the Iłowa interchange)—completion of the works is planned for the second half of 2022.
  • from km 33.76 (4 km before the Iłowa interchange) to the voivodeship boundary—the tender procedure is under way.
  • voivodeship boundary–Golnice interchange—the tender procedure is under way.

A18 towards Western Europe

National road no. 18 is located within the Third Pan-European Transport Corridor, forming part of the international E36/40 connection in Poland. This corridor connects Ukraine, Slovakia and southern Poland with Dresden and Berlin. National road no. 18 is classified as one of Poland’s main roads of industrial and tourist importance. It connects the A4 motorway with the border crossing in Olszyna. The old national road no. 18, now its southern carriageway, was built by the Germans in the 1930s. It formed part of the Berlin–Wrocław motorway.

In November 2004, the first stage of adapting national road no. 18 to the parameters of the future A18 motorway began. A parallel northern carriageway was added to the existing road and opened to traffic in 2006.
