On 27 May, officers arrested two Nigerian citizens, aged 35 and 46, who had made deceiving women their source of regular income.

“On Wednesday, Border Guard officers from Jelenia Góra, working together with police officers from the Cybercrime Department of the Warsaw Metropolitan Police Headquarters, arrested two Nigerian citizens in Wrocław. Using online dating portals, they deceived single women and extorted substantial sums of money from them,” says Border Guard Major Joanna Konieczniak, press spokesperson for the Nadodrzański Border Guard Unit.

She adds:

The foreigners claimed to be an American soldier, a doctor from Syria and an engineer working on an oil rig. They extorted substantial sums of money from women who contacted them through online dating portals.

The group, which had been operating for several years, scammed at least seven women out of approximately PLN 420,000.

There may be many more victims

During searches of several apartments in Wrocław, officers secured data storage devices and bank documentation that may indicate that there are many more victims.

The proceedings in this case are supervised by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw. Border Guard Major J. Konieczniak says: “The men were charged with fraud. By court decision, they were temporarily detained for three months. The case is ongoing.”

Fraud is punishable by between six months and as many as eight years in prison.
