During World War II, a branch of the German Gross Rosen concentration camp was located on Staroszkolna Street and on Orla Street (the Concordia building complex). The present-day Staroszkolna Street was home to Arbeitslager Bunzlau 1. Wooden components used for military purposes were produced there. At Arbeitslager Bunzlau 2 on Orla Street, among other things, parts for military aircraft were produced.

The building demolished recently (on the site of the former Bonitex plant) also belonged to Arbeitslager Bunzlau 2, and prisoners worked there as well. “Preserving all the sites connected with martyrdom would have to bring the redevelopment of Bolesławiec to a complete halt, because Poles suffered here everywhere, but whether that was right or not will be judged by society,” Zdzisław Abramowicz told Muzyczne Radio, a researcher of the region’s history.

Another retail park with a large DIY store is planned on Staroszkolna Street, while it is not yet known what will be built on Orla Street. The land belongs to private owners.

The scouts of the Szare Szeregi Headquarters in Bolesławiec have undertaken to commemorate all sites connected with martyrdom.
