It is worth knowing that modern technological advances now make it possible to restore hearing in almost every case, and the treatment of hearing disorders is becoming increasingly effective. Patients are increasingly opting for cochlear implants, which help them enjoy hearing again.
How Does an Implant Work—Everything You Need to Know
An implant is an advanced electronic device consisting of two parts—external and internal. It makes it possible to achieve hearing quality very close to physiological hearing. Hearing treatment involves identifying the cause of the condition and selecting the appropriate remedy. In cases of profound sensorineural hearing loss, experts recommend implantation. These are small devices designed to transmit a sound signal to the brain through appropriate stimulation of the cochlea (cochlear implant) or to transmit sounds through bone conduction (Baha implant). Taking all factors into account, including the degree and type of condition involved, the doctor will select an implant that provides appropriate treatment for hearing loss.
What Does Implantation Look Like?
Depending on the recommended method of treating hearing loss, the implantation process may vary. In every case, however, the Patient will first undergo appropriate examinations to determine whether they qualify for surgery. The operation is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes two hours. The implant is inserted directly behind the ear; to do this, the doctor makes a small incision (approximately 4 cm). The Patient should remain under medical supervision for 2–3 days after the procedure, after which they may leave the clinic. After approximately four weeks, the sutures are removed, and the next step is a meeting with a clinical engineer, who will fit the appropriate sound processor. It must be taken into account that although the technical implantation procedure is already behind the Patient, a period of rehabilitation still remains; during this time, hearing will gradually improve. This is a process in which working with specialists, speech therapists and therapists will be crucial, as will the Patient’s work outside the clinic—connected with the regular and intensive use of the sound processor. Rehabilitation proceeds differently for each Patient: sometimes immediate progress can be observed, while in other cases the effects take a little longer to appear.
