Officers from the Legnica Municipal Police Headquarters’ Traffic Department stopped a passenger vehicle for a roadside check after its driver exceeded the speed limit by 31 km/h.

During the official procedures, the officers checked not only the vehicle’s technical condition but also its odometer. It turned out that the odometer reading recorded during the last technical inspection was... several thousand kilometres higher than it is now.

Legnica police:

The driver was fined for speeding, while officers from the criminal investigation division will deal with the odometer case.

Investigators will clarify how the odometer reading was changed and who is responsible.

The officers remind drivers that, since 1 January 2020, road traffic regulations have required police officers to check and document the odometer reading in the inspected vehicle:

Under Article 306a of the Criminal Code, anyone who changes the odometer reading of a motor vehicle or interferes with the accuracy of its measurement is liable to imprisonment for between 3 months and 5 years.

The same penalty applies to anyone who commissions another person to commit this act.

They add:

In cases of lesser gravity, the offender is liable to a fine, restriction of liberty or imprisonment for up to 2 years.
