The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 8, at around 11:00 a.m. in Wrocław. Police officers from the Lower Silesian police headquarters' riot prevention unit went to intervene at one of the tenement buildings in the Stare Miasto district. The report concerned an aggressive man who had damaged his neighbor's door with an axe and was walking around the stairwell holding the dangerous tool.
In view of the real threat to residents, the officers immediately went to the scene. A man with an axe then ran into the building's stairwell and attacked one of the police officers. Fortunately, the blade struck the bulletproof vest the officer was wearing. The other two officers used their service firearms against the attacker, successfully subduing him.
The suspect received medical assistance at the scene and was then taken to hospital.
Fortunately, the police officer who was struck by the aggressor with the dangerous tool did not suffer any serious injuries.
The circumstances surrounding the aggressive man's behavior and his motives are currently being investigated. A prosecutor and a police investigative team were present at the scene.
KWP Wrocław:
Thanks to the actions of the officers who, in response to the report and at risk to their health and lives, took immediate steps to detain the aggressive man, a possible tragedy was ultimately prevented—one that could have occurred if the attacker had confronted other random people.
The officers add:
In their daily service for the safety of residents, police officers must be alert to various situations, beginning with those requiring sensitivity to human emotions, when they act in cases involving victims of different crimes, through moments requiring negotiation skills in all kinds of conflicts—including family or neighborhood disputes—and ending with extreme situations, such as the one described above, where fractions of a second matter and, while putting their own lives and health at risk, they simultaneously prevent a possible tragedy.
