On Saturday, in the village of Ławszowa, a local resident was attacked by Ukrainian citizens. The attackers chased him all the way to his home and then damaged his front door. That same night, a bee apiary was destroyed. Is this a coincidence??

The woman added that another incident involving Ukrainians took place on 26 November, this time in Świętoszów. It was described on Facebook:

[…] an unpleasant situation happened to me when I was returning from the petrol station. I passed six guys, aged between 18 and 30 (from Ukraine). Judging by their conversation and behaviour, they were probably under the influence of alcohol or other substances. They occupied the entire pavement, so I walked on the grass. Suddenly, they all stopped, and one of them turned back toward me and asked for a cigarette. I took out a pack, and he snatched the whole pack from my hand. I asked him what he was doing, and he muttered something in his language. I wanted to take the cigarettes back, and we started wrestling. We fell to the ground. Then his friends ran over, and two of them started beating me. When the one who had approached me got up from the ground, they all ran toward the Polish chalet and disappeared. I have a question: is this normal in Świętoszów? They act as if they were at home and could do whatever they wanted.

Incident in Świętoszów

What else has to happen before someone finally reacts?? Where are the authorities of our municipality in all this??? We do not want to lump everyone together, because there are people who came here to earn money, leaving their families far away, but if someone does not finally do something about this, how are we supposed to live?? In constant fear, walking through the village in the evening?? Surely they are the guests here, and they have got things mixed up.

As we established, the matter of the damaged front door was not reported to the police. The destruction of four beehives, together with the bee colonies, was reported, however. The losses in the latter case were estimated at PLN 12,000. Actions are underway to establish the identity of and arrest the vandals. They could face up to five years in prison.

We also asked the authorities of Osiecznica Municipality for comment. Wójt Waldemar Nalazek:

In response to [...] the email, I inform you that I have read the contents of the questions from the reader from Ławszowa with great attention and concern. Understanding the residents’ concerns, I assure you that the authorities of Osiecznica Municipality will first take steps to disseminate information among both employers and those renting apartments to foreigners about the need for Ukrainian citizens residing in the municipality to fulfil their registration obligations.

Additionally, I would like to inform you that, as of today [3 December – istotne.pl note], apart from the isolated incident that took place in Świętoszów, no complaints related to Ukrainian citizens residing in Osiecznica Municipality have been submitted to the Osiecznica Municipal Office.

The head of the municipality added:

I would like to inform you that today, 3 December 2019, a meeting of the Chairpersons of the Osiecznica Municipal Council committees was held at the Osiecznica Municipal Office. The Chairperson of the Osiecznica Municipal Council also took part. The stay of Ukrainian citizens and the related problems in Osiecznica Municipality were discussed during the meeting. It was decided to invite the Police Commander in Nowogrodziec to a meeting of the Council in order to discuss ways of improving residents’ safety.

What do you think? Is there a problem with our eastern neighbours in our county—for this matter clearly concerns more than just Osiecznica Municipality—or is there not? We invite you to join the discussion.
