The incident occurred at the beginning of November in Wykroty. Wolves attacked sheep in the village, on Główna Street. The owner found the dead animals on the morning of 2 November. Seven sheep were already dead. The predators probably got through the fence via a hole dug underneath it. Only skeletons remained of two sheep. Not even a trace was left of the lambs. One animal had its throat bitten, but it was still showing signs of life and was saved.
The owners of the mauled sheep learned that they would not receive compensation for the damage caused by the wolves. Why? As we read on the website of the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection in Wrocław, to which such incidents should be reported:
Compensation is not granted, among other things, for damage caused by wolves, bears or lynx to livestock left without direct supervision between sunset and sunrise. In disputed cases concerning the amount of compensation for damage caused, among other things, by wolves, decisions are made by the ordinary courts.
And this is the answer the owners of the mauled sheep received. The owner of the killed animals, Monika, does not hide her bitterness and asks:
So should my husband or I sleep in the sheepfold, putting our lives at risk?
and adds:
The situation is becoming serious because wolves are being seen in our area more and more often, not only in the forest but also in the village. A few days ago, at 8 a.m., they were by the fence of a neighbour who also keeps animals. Wolves are protected, they cause major losses for farmers, and the RDEP in Wrocław does not want to pay compensation for losses involving animals.
It appears that the owners of the mauled sheep have no option left but to take the matter to court.
