At the beginning of the last century, this was the “Metropol” cinematograph; today it is the “Orzeł” Cultural Integration Centre. In the “Orzeł” Hall, in addition to concerts and theatrical performances, film screenings are organised at weekends. The films shown are festival productions or films presented as part of thematic programmes.

From December this year, we are offering a new, ambitious programme aimed at a discerning audience. We begin by introducing our viewers to the world of films about musicians and featuring musicians. There will also be something for our youngest viewers.

On 6 December, we begin with a preview screening of the film “SERIES OF UNLIKELY EVENTS”, directed by Szymon Wasylow. It is a documentary showing the life of the rock band Happysad during a concert tour. Admission to this event is free!

On the first weekend of December, our screen will feature a biographical film inspired by true events about a blind piano genius: “IKAR. THE LEGEND OF MIETEK KOSZ”. This is an excellent film by Maciej Pieprzyca about an outstanding jazz pianist from the 1960s, featuring another brilliant performance by Dawid Ogrodnik and superb music arranged by Leszek Możdżer. At this year’s 44th Polish Feature Film Festival in Gdynia, the film received six distinctions, including the Silver Lions!

Staying with the rhythm of jazz, we are offering our viewers a musical documentary entitled “AMAZING GRACE: ARETHA FRANKLIN”. It records a gospel concert held over two consecutive nights, featuring the famous singer. Made by Sydney Pollack, who won an Oscar for “Out of Africa”, it is already winning the hearts of Polish audiences. Aretha Franklin, well known to all music lovers—the winner of 18 Grammy Awards and the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame—successfully enchanted listeners with her deep, warm voice throughout her long career, which lasted more than sixty years.

If the film appeals to jazz lovers, from January we will present films once a month as part of a series we have called “CINEMA AND JAZZ”. The programme includes screenings of films such as: Miles Davis: Birth of The Cool, Blue Note Records: Beyond The Notes, Ella Fitzgerald…

Another musical title among our December offerings is a genuine, moving and eagerly awaited production about people without whom the Polish music scene could not exist—namely Kazik Staszewski and his band. The camera accompanied the musicians during their concert tour and in their everyday lives, showing the group’s phenomenon and its extraordinary bond with its fans. This is how the film “KULT.FILM”, directed by Olga Bieniek, came about.

Every month, our programme will include films intended for our youngest viewers. The upcoming screenings include the family-oriented international winter-themed production “SNOWTIME”, an absorbing animated comedy about the adventures of an Arctic fox and his polar friends. The film can also be screened in the mornings for organised groups; schools and preschools are welcome to contact us.
