Mayor of Nowogrodziec Robert Relich:
In view of the beginning of another heating season, I remind you that, pursuant to Resolution No. XLI/1407/17 of the Lower Silesian Regional Assembly of 30 November 2017 (Official Journal of 2017, item 5155), the use of the lowest-quality solid fuels is prohibited.
The anti-smog resolution therefore applies to lignite, which has a low calorific value and, when burned, emits large quantities of particulate matter, sulphur, mercury and highly toxic benzo[a]pyrene. The manner in which a furnace, fireplace or “goat” stove is to be used is specified by its manufacturer. Thus, if the instructions state that a furnace should be fired with wood from deciduous trees, that is the fuel that should be used in it.
If the furnace is coal-fired, it should be fired with coal—not, for example, coal slack, which requires special installations. In every case, the worst thing one can do is burn anything that happens to be at hand in the furnace.
Of course, burning municipal waste is still prohibited, as it has been until now. Waste generated in households varies in composition and may affect human health and life as well as the natural environment, particularly in the context of pollutants emitted as a result of the thermal treatment of such waste.
The mayor adds:
Burning municipal waste is unjustified and, above all, unprofitable, because every resident is required to pay a fee for municipal waste management. In exchange for the fee paid, municipal waste is collected from inhabited properties in any quantity.
Let us take care of our environment, which is our health resort!
