They called us Reader, who informed us that the Gminne Centrum Kultury i Sportu in Nowogrodziec rents rooms to companies conducting direct sales. These companies, the man stresses, con people—mainly seniors and pensioners. They sell seniors goods of questionable quality at heavily inflated prices. (The complainant’s mother was similarly deceived.)
We asked the Nowogrodziec Municipal Office for comment. Mayor Robert Relich:
In response to the [...] inquiry concerning the rental of the room, we inform you that the Nowogrodziec Municipal Office has no possibility of effectively verifying whether the company renting the room conducts its business honestly.
The Municipal Office does not supervise the Gminne Centrum Kultury i Sportu in Nowogrodziec with regard to the conclusion of room rental agreements.
The municipal head adds:
At the same time, we inform you that we support measures preventing unfair competition and protect consumer rights. The Consumer Ombudsman at the Bolesławiec District Office will be informed of the situation.
Reaching as many people as possible with information that companies engaged in direct sales may sell goods of questionable quality at inflated prices during organized meetings can help prevent abuses, and the role of the media in this regard is invaluable.
