We were asked to publicize the issue by our Reader, who wrote in an email to the editorial office: “I would like to draw attention to a very worrying situation occurring on Jeleniogórska Street (next to the market). I have the impression that [...] someone will be run over by a car there any day now. Pedestrians walk wherever they please.” She added: “The crosswalk is a little farther away, but they [piesi – przyp. red.] force their way under the wheels of cars. An accident like this will happen any day now—I can feel it.”

There are many places where pedestrians routinely run across roads, disregarding the signs. Municipal police officers most often intervene near the supermarkets on Chrobrego Street and Tysiąclecia Avenue, as well as... on Jeleniogórska Street.

“There is a crosswalk on this street, but people often take a shortcut,” Kamila Chalewicz, deputy commander of the Bolesławiec Municipal Police, told IstotneInformacje.pl. “I myself witnessed a woman with a stroller run across the road in a prohibited place. An adult is responsible for themselves, but when they also put a child at risk, it is difficult to call it anything other than a lack of imagination.”

Crossing the road in a prohibited place carries a PLN 50 fine. However, this does not deter everyone. “We always have a choice,” Kamila Chalewicz emphasizes. “We can cross the street in a safe place or expose ourselves to danger.”
