The ongoing update, particularly its visual presentation, is intended to draw attention to the scale of the tragedies occurring on Polish roads. Will the map prompt road users to reflect, and will this year's holidays be safe? Unfortunately, with each passing day the map will become less clear, as new points continue to appear. Each point represents a human tragedy!

Since the beginning of the holidays through 22 July, 244 fatal accidents have occurred on roads throughout Poland.

Road accidents are usually not accidents in the sense of being random. Almost every incident involves dangerous behaviour by a driver or pedestrian. Many tragedies could have been avoided if basic rules of caution and safety had been observed. Below, we highlight simple yet extremely important rules that improve road safety.

  • Observe traffic regulations, particularly permitted speed limits, sobriety requirements, the use of seat belts and the proper transportation of children in vehicles
  • Keep telephone conversations to a minimum and, when necessary, use a hands-free kit. A telephone conversation, even using permitted devices, distracts the vehicle driver
  • Adjust your speed to the weather and road conditions, your skills and your psychophysical condition
  • Signal your manoeuvres on the road sufficiently early and in such a way that they are visible to other road users
  • Always slow down before pedestrian crossings, public transport stops and intersections
  • Do not overtake or pass vehicles near pedestrian crossings or stops, or on the crossings themselves
  • Always take breaks during journeys lasting several hours
  • Before setting off, check the vehicle's technical condition, particularly its tyres, lights and fluid levels
