EU member states have finally approved regulations concerning the withdrawal of disposable plastic products from the market. (According to the EU, these products litter beaches, seas and oceans the most.)

These include disposable plates, cutlery, straws, balloon sticks, cotton buds and stirrers. In two years, these plastic products, where alternatives are available, will be banned. Once the regulations enter into force, the emphasis will be on ensuring that disposable products are made from materials that are more biodegradable. The European Commission estimates that these regulations will prevent environmental damage which, by 2030, would have cost the equivalent of 22 billion euros.

Disposable plastic products will be banned from 2021.
