As reported by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways, five bids valued at approximately PLN 308.2 million to PLN 332.3 million were submitted in the tender for reconstructing the first 22 km of DK18 and adapting it to motorway standards. Since all the bids exceeded the amount allocated by the contracting authority for the investment, namely PLN 303.8 million, a decision was made to cancel the tender. Officials:

Let us recall that the tender concerned the reconstruction of the southern carriageway of DK18, from km 11.86 to km 33.76, together with the construction of a Motorway Maintenance Area (OUA), the Żary motorway interchange at km 24.73 (reconstruction of elements of the existing partial-cloverleaf interchange), and engineering structures (three viaducts, three animal crossings over the motorway, a bridge and an underpass beneath the motorway).

DK18 Is Being Transformed into A18

The northern carriageway was added during the first phase of adapting DK18 Olszyna–Golnice to the standards of the EU road network with motorway parameters. Work began in November 2004, and the newly constructed northern carriageway was opened to traffic in 2006.

During the second phase, the southern carriageway will be reconstructed and access roads will also be built; elements of the motorway interchanges will be reconstructed, technical infrastructure facilities will be constructed, and existing ones will be rebuilt.

In addition to the Motorway Maintenance Area (OUA), elements of motorway maintenance and management systems, environmental protection facilities (including animal crossings), and protection for agricultural and forest areas will be created.

How will the reconstruction of the Olszyna–Golnice section proceed?

The reconstruction of the entire Olszyna–Golnice section has been divided into four implementation sections:

  • the section from the Olszyna interchange to km 11.86 (more than one kilometre beyond the Żary Zachód interchange towards Wrocław)
  • the section from km 11.86 (more than one kilometre beyond the Żary Zachód interchange towards Wrocław) to km 33.76 (nearly 4 km before the Iłowa interchange)
  • the section from km 33.76 (nearly 4 km before the Iłowa interchange) to the voivodeship boundary,
  • the section from the voivodeship boundary to the Golnice interchange.
