The case deeply outraged the residents of Lwówek Śląski, especially since situations of this kind had not previously occurred in the town.
Due to the nature of the incident, experienced police officers were assigned to the case. Under the supervision of the district prosecutor, their task was to identify and arrest the suspects as quickly as possible.
In the first phase, officers obtained a recording of the entire incident from surveillance cameras; all police officers from the criminal investigation and prevention divisions reviewed this material. Community police officers in Lwówek Śląski also carried out investigative activities.
Based on distinctive details and with the help of residents of Lwówek Śląski, officers identified the first suspect. At the time of his arrest, he was very surprised that the officers had tracked him down so quickly. However, despite the severe penalty he faced, he did not want to identify the second perpetrator. The 27-year-old resident of Lwówek Śląski was, by court decision, placed in temporary custody for three months.
In addition, the police officers handling the case decided to ask the town’s residents for help. For investigative purposes, surveillance footage was widely released in the media, with information that police were looking for the perpetrator shown attacking the victim in the video.
The response from residents was very strong. Police officers received many reports containing information, even minor details noticed by people who watched the footage. Each report was analyzed and verified.
An important piece of information was that the suspect might live in Legnica County and come from the area around Lwówek Śląski. Police officers from Legnica were therefore asked to help, and they checked several indicated addresses.
After several days, police officers received information that the possible perpetrator knew he was one of the identified men and that he was wanted by the police. He therefore went to the police headquarters himself, where he was immediately arrested.
On March 8, the suspect was taken to the Lwówek prosecutor’s office and questioned there. At the prosecutor’s request, the court ordered temporary custody for the 23-year-old detainee. Both perpetrators face severe prison sentences.
