The incident occurred on the night of November 20–21, 2017, in Kowary, in the apartment occupied by 34-year-old Arkadiusz Z. and his 25-year-old common-law wife. In the evening, Z. attacked his partner, among other things striking her lower limbs with the blade of a machete.
In addition, the suspect punched his victim all over her body and struck her with the blunt part of the machete. He also allegedly strangled the injured woman with a metal chain.
As a result of the man's actions, the victim suffered numerous injuries, including a chop wound to the lower leg causing an open fracture, as well as other wounds and bruises across her body.
The victim managed to call an ambulance and the police to the scene. The woman was immediately taken to hospital. She survived thanks to the medical assistance she received.
Their four-month-old child was also in the suspect's and victim's apartment at the time of the incident. The infant was not injured. (After the incident, the child was provided with care).
The perpetrator was arrested and, at the prosecutor's request, placed in pretrial detention.
The man was initially charged with causing serious bodily harm to the victim; the charge was later supplemented with attempted murder. Arkadiusz Z. pleaded not guilty.
The proceedings also established that, while in pretrial detention, the suspect urged his common-law wife to change the testimony she had given. Consequently, he was also charged with inciting the submission of false testimony.
The man had previously been convicted of various offenses.
In June 2018, the Jelenia Góra District Prosecutor's Office filed an indictment against Arkadiusz Z.
After the trial, the defendant was sentenced after being found guilty of both offenses with which he had been charged. He received a 15-year prison sentence. The judgment is not final.
