The website of Gmina Nowogrodziec has published an appeal by Mayor Roberta Relicha:
Dear Residents!
I remind you that, pursuant to Resolution No. XLI/1407/17 of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship Assembly dated 30 November 2017 (Journal of Laws of 2017, item 5155), a ban on the use of the lowest-quality solid fuels has been in force since 1 July 2018. The anti-smog resolution therefore applies to:
- lignite, which has a low calorific value and, when burned, emits large amounts of dust, sulfur, mercury and highly toxic benzo[a]pyrene
- coal slurries and coal waste, whose combustion causes high dust emissions—even 50 times greater than when lump coal is burned. Slurry damages appliances and chimneys and significantly worsens combustion conditions
- fine coal—coal in loose form with a grain size of less than three millimeters, which generates very large amounts of dust released into the atmosphere
- wet wood, with a moisture content above 20% in working condition. Burning it leads to high emissions of highly carcinogenic benzo[a]pyrene, as well as dust, including the most harmful kinds. Only dry wood may be burned, preferably seasoned for at least two years.
The resolution applies to every resident and every business entity within the voivodeship; failure to comply is punishable by a fine of up to PLN 5,000.00.
Purchased fuel should be accompanied by a quality certificate confirming its origin and characteristic quality parameters. It is advisable to keep the receipt or other proof of purchase in case of an inspection.
The mayor adds:
Of course, burning waste in stoves has also been prohibited up to now.
Let us care for our environment and provide ourselves and our descendants with clean air.
