Grażyna Hanaf, chair of the association’s board and a journalist for the istotne.pl portal, was asked to meet with students at Primary School No. 5 in Bolesławiec. The idea was initiated by the school’s principal, Katarzyna Reguła.
“It was a good idea, because hate is a journalist’s bread and butter,” says Grażyna Hanaf. “I am not the only one who experiences it when I publish something that does not suit certain readers; I still read attacks on people we write about in our pages. Everyone engages in hate—children, teenagers and adults—by expressing their dislike or hatred. We also very often experience unfavourable, unfair and painful judgments. That is why I wanted to explain the mechanism of hate to the children as clearly as possible, and for this purpose I consulted Teresa Rudzińska, the head of the counseling center,” the journalist adds.
During a meeting with school psychologists, Teresa Rudzińska presented the association’s idea, recommending the presentations as an alternative to the educational and preventive activities conducted in schools.
The presentation lasts 45 minutes—one class period—during which students learn what emotions drive people who use forms of communication such as insulting, mocking, humiliating or verbally attacking others online, at school or in the environment where the student often spends time. The presentation covers topics such as the role of aggression and jealousy in our lives, Internet safety, adult support, the rights of the person being attacked, and the obligation to report serious threats or attacks on privacy to the police. There is also extensive discussion of boundaries, respect and the need for safety. After the class, the children receive a leaflet summarizing the meeting and complete an anonymous questionnaire about their own experiences with hate.
The association sincerely thanks the educators and teachers who organized meetings at the following schools:
