The Jelenia Góra District Prosecutor’s Office has filed an indictment with the District Court in Lwówek Śląski against Czesław K. He is accused of “unintentionally causing an incident endangering the life and health of many people and property on a large scale, in the form of an explosion of flammable materials.”

The disaster in question occurred on January 25 in one of the tenement buildings in the center of Mirsk (Lwówek County). As established by the Jelenia Góra District Prosecutor’s Office, the 65-year-old resident of one of the multi-family buildings in Mirsk incorrectly connected a gas cylinder, causing a leak. Then… he lit a cigarette, resulting in ignition and an explosion.

Seven people were injured. The building was completely destroyed; neighboring properties were also damaged. The losses amount to nearly one million złotys.

Among other things, the case involved an expert opinion on piped gas. The expert determined that both the cooker and the gas cylinder were in working order, and that the leak was caused by an improper cylinder replacement.

Czesław K. did not admit to committing the alleged offense. At the time of the incident, the accused was intoxicated.

The man had not previously been convicted.

K. could now face up to five years in prison.
