– I always return to Bolesławiec with the greatest fondness – said former President of the Republic of Poland Aleksander Kwaśniewski during a press conference held in the hall of the Bolesławiec Cultural Centre – International Ceramics Centre. – Congratulations on keeping this city so beautiful and on its fame for ceramics.

A. Kwaśniewski also took a jab at the incumbent president, Andrzej Dudzie, speaking about the renovation of the Bolesławiec Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary: – I am glad that the imaginary community is helping restore this magnificent building.

At 1 p.m., the former head of state will present scholarships at the Old Theatre on behalf of the Jerzy Szmajdziński Foundation. – Jerzy Szmajdziński was very well known in Bolesławiec – Aleksander Kwaśniewski recalled his colleague. – He was here practically every week and had good relations not only with his own voters. We are missing parliamentarians like him.

According to Kwaśniewski, local elections are important because they begin an electoral marathon: there will be local, European and parliamentary elections. The former president hopes that the left will recover and return to politics.


The unveiling of a plaque commemorating former Minister of National Defence and Democratic Left Alliance activist Jerzy Szmajdziński, who died in the Smolensk air disaster, will take place on Tuesday, 9 October outside the Bolesławiec SLD headquarters (Opitza Street).

Aleksander Kwaśniewski, former President of the Republic of Poland, will attend the ceremony.

The plaque was funded by the SLD District Council, as well as Jerzy Szmajdziński’s colleagues and supporters. The invitations are extended by Stanisław Chwojnicki and Piotr Roman.

The ceremony begins at 2 p.m.
