Smarzowski’s highly controversial film is already in the cinema’s programme, although we will see it almost a month after its premiere, on 26 October. Why? The Marvel film “Venom” and “Hotel Transylvania 3”, both in 2D and 3D, are premiering on the large screen. A cinema with one large auditorium cannot afford to show all the premieres that enter cinemas every week.
– We decided on two other premieres. These are films whose sequels fans want to see – explains cinema manager Ewa Chrobot. – These are difficult choices, because to show a premiere, we have to guarantee that the film will be screened for three, and sometimes four, weeks, a specific number of times a day and in the large auditorium. We decided on Marvel’s “Venom”, starring Oscar winner Tom Hardy, and the favourite film of children and adults, “Hotel Transylvania 3”. That is why “Clergy” will be shown at Forum later, from 26 October for one week. If the audience turns out in sufficient numbers, we will extend its run in November – adds Ewa Chrobot.
In our opinion, Wojciech Smarzowski will certainly shock viewers once again. People will go to see “Clergy” and may be disgusted, may admit it is right, become angry or outraged, and then make sure their children regularly attend religious education at school, go to First Communion and Confirmation. Because they have to, because that is what is expected, because everyone does it, because of what people will say, because a priest is human too. And worst of all: because how could it harm the child? Apart from the media revolution, there probably will not be a revolution in Poland. Yet healthy secularisation of our state and holding the Catholic Church accountable for its sins would be very useful in Poland.
The nationwide premiere of the film will take place on 28 September 2018. “Clergy” was presented at the 43rd Polish Feature Film Festival in Gdynia, where it won three statuettes: the Audience Award, the award for production design and a special award for addressing an important social issue.
