“Volhynia” is the first film to address a subject previously left unspoken in Polish cinema: the tragic events in Volhynia in 1943–1944. The film begins in the spring of 1939 in a small village inhabited by Ukrainians, Poles and Jews. Seventeen-year-old Zosia is in love with a Ukrainian boy her age from the same village. However, she learns that her father has decided to marry her off to the wealthiest farmer in the village, the Pole Maciej Skiba, a much older widower with two children. Soon war breaks out, and the village’s former way of life is first transformed by Soviet occupation and later by the German attack on the USSR. Zosia becomes a witness and then a participant in the tragic events caused by the growing wave of Ukrainian nationalism. Tensions also rise between the Polish and Ukrainian neighbours. Disputes break out, and people disappear. News reaches the village of brutal and bloody events in eastern Volhynia. The attacks reach their climax in the summer of 1943. Amid this sea of hatred, Zosia tries to save herself and her children.
