In recent years, dashboard cameras have become extremely popular in Poland – passenger-car drivers know their usefulness very well, as they want to avoid problems related to proving fault in the event of an accident or collision. In the case of trucks, systems of this type—naturally more advanced—already seem practically essential. The only thing left is to choose the right one.

Safety… but not only

Today’s freight-transport market is highly developed, resulting in enormous competition: whoever offers lower prices and better service quality has a fairly good chance of attracting a sudden influx of customers. However, optimizing costs in this kind of business is by no means easy, because a significant portion of operating expenses consists of charges that cannot be substantially reduced. This is where telematics comes to the rescue.

Monitoring systems designed for freight transport differ from the devices we know from passenger cars. In the latter, the purpose is simply to record what happens on the road; in the case of trucks, this is of course a very important part of the entire journey. Good devices in the “Vehicle Tracking” segment can collect data such as the vehicle’s speed at a given moment, braking and stoppages. Proper analysis of this information can, especially in a larger company, help optimize routes and consequently generate savings. Examples are not hard to find—one of the larger courier companies introduced a ban on… turning left for its drivers, in order to avoid waiting for an opportunity to enter a clear road. The result? Reduced carbon-dioxide emissions and obvious savings in fuel consumption.

How to choose a monitoring system

There are many companies offering comprehensive monitoring systems—for example, the British Vision Track. When choosing the best solution for us, it is worth checking whether the manufacturer enables data to be transferred smoothly over the internet, for example by providing cloud storage for recordings from cameras and telemetry sensors. This is a very useful solution today.
