As the owner told us, the idea came to him after a conversation with several regular customers who complained about the authorities in the city. One of them had been deprived of his favourite position long ago, another had been fined by the Municipal Police for catching a dog that had escaped from its owner, and another customer complained that she had broken her expensive high heels on uneven paving in the market square. Yet another could no longer stand the fact that the authorities did not care about high culture in the city, but kept organising fairs with beer and sausages.
“People were angry and frustrated, and that is not conducive to good digestion,” the restaurant owner explained to us. “I would rather have them hit a target with the president on it than have their bile overflow and have them start thinking that their indigestion was caused by what they ate at my place. This way, they throw, enjoy themselves like children when they hit the president in the eye or nose, and leave healthier,” he added sagely.
The game of darts with the unusual target attracts crowds of people frustrated and angry with those in power to the restaurant.
“All sorts come here. When two of them, driven by some impulse, get hold of the darts, they play intensely and do not want to let anyone else join in. I had to put out two additional targets so that others could play too when those two come in,” says the originator of the presidential darts game. “Athletes from clubs without municipal funding come here and hold genuinely professional competitions. With scoring, a semifinal and a final, which the best players reach. And parents from municipal schools that are being merged. We also get people in disguises: they stick on moustaches, put on wigs and glasses. They do not take off their coats; they turn their collars up high. They throw once, hit the target and leave. They pretend that they are well disguised, and we pretend not to recognise them. Only once did the mayor’s wig tilt so far during a throw that we had to pretend nobody was looking,” the restaurateur recounts.
According to our information, whoever wins the presidential darts championship will become a candidate for president of the newly formed Association of Former Associates, Unfunded Athletes and Ousted Enemies of the President, “We Want a Share of the Pie.”
