The so-called recycling fee has been in effect since the beginning of the year. Under the new rules, shops may no longer offer shopping bags for free. Stores that previously charged for them have raised their prices. Since January 1, the cheapest bag at Biedronka costs 25 groszy. In Groszek stores, the cheapest bags cost 30 groszy. At Lidl, such a bag costs 33 grosze. The same price applies to bags at Kaufland stores. Meanwhile, at Tesco and Żabka , the cheapest plastic bag costs 35 groszy. At Polo Market and Dino, the cheapest bags cost 39 groszy. At Lewiatan stores, the price is 40 groszy. Meanwhile, at the Carrefour supermarket, a bag costs 70 groszy. So-called produce bags, used when buying vegetables, fruit and bread, among other products, remain free at all supermarkets.

The main aim of the new regulations, whose introduction was required by EU legislation, is to discourage the use of plastic bags. It is currently estimated that each Pole uses an average of 250–300 plastic bags per year. The new fee will also provide a boost to the state budget. According to estimates by the Ministry of the Environment, revenue could reach as much as PLN 1.1 billion after the first year the regulations are in force, excluding VAT revenue.
