Unfortunately, parents very often push away for a long time the thought that experimenting with drugs or alcohol—or addiction itself—could affect their own child. “Recognizing this in one’s child is an incredibly difficult moment in a parent’s life,” say officers from Lubin.
To raise parents’ awareness, help them recognize the first signs of reaching for illegal substances, and explain the problem and scale of drug addiction among young people, the District Police Headquarters, together with the Municipal Social Welfare Centre in Lubin, organized meetings with parents led by a representative of the Addiction Prevention Office. In addition, police officers and therapists from MOPS conduct classes and workshops for young people throughout our city.
The meetings with a representative of the Addiction Prevention Office, considered very interesting both by the parents themselves and by educators from the schools involved, are intended primarily to help parents gain even a basic understanding of how individual drugs work and how to recognize whether a child has taken a drug or a legal high. They also address what to do, whom to contact, how serious the problem is, and when action should begin.
