The therapeutic fairy tale “Garbuska” is an adventure-filled story about Matylda, a hunchbacked girl who runs away from home because she wants to find a witch who grants every wish. Legend has it that only hunchbacked people know the way to the witch. Along the way, the girl meets Karol, a boy from a poor family, and Prince Robert, who asks for her hand in marriage. The boys are also looking for the witch and have their own dreams to fulfill. Biszkopt (an exceptional and very mysterious friend) and an old suitcase with a very unusual contents accompany the girl throughout her journey. Matylda’s parents did not spoil her or show her affection; they wanted to raise her to be a strong and independent daughter. At night, however, something pressed on their chests, so they took something out of their hearts and hid it in the old suitcase.

The author of the twelve illustrations for the fairy tale is Anna Chaberek, who received her degree in painting from Piotr Błażejewski’s studio in 2007 (the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław). The painter now lives in Stafford, Great Britain, where she runs a small gallery and actively participates every year in the “Open Art” exhibition at Shire Hall Galery.
