Today marks 54 years since the tragedy that unfolded in Łaziska near Bolesławiec. On November 13, 1963, a Soviet jet crashed into one family’s home. Several people were inside the building. Two of them—5-year-old Zosia and 18-year-old Tadeusz—died at the scene.
Mrs. Maria, who lost her sister and cousin in the disaster, was 15 at the time. When the tragedy occurred, she was attending Mass at church.
Meanwhile, Mr. Wiesław—he was two years old at the time—was at the scene. As he says himself, he survived by a miracle. His parents pulled him out from under the rubble.
The Soviet pilot, who managed to eject, survived. The man died two years after the tragedy in Łaziska, in another plane crash.
