First meeting, October 28

  • 16:00 Terrible Consequences of a Television Breakdown
  • 18:30 Rejs
  • approx. 20:00 meeting with Maciej Łuczak, an expert on Polish comedies and author of books about the comedies “Rejs,” “Wniebowzięci” and Stanisław Bareja’s “Miś”

The “Comedy Without Borders” project involves Polish-Czech meetings for film-comedy enthusiasts, held at the “Orzeł” Cultural Integration Centre in Bolesławiec. The project consists of a series of seven weekend meetings (screenings of two films on a selected Saturday) held once a month.

Each time, the film screenings (one selected Czech comedy and one Polish comedy) will be followed by a themed meeting with an invited guest—a screenwriter, director, actor or person connected with the title shown that day. The meeting will take the form of a lecture or discussion panel, during which viewers will interact with the invited guest. The project will run from October 2017 to June 2018 (with a break around the holidays), and each meeting will be attended by up to 120 viewers from Poland and the Czech Republic.

The meeting schedule will be updated on an ongoing basis, as the dates of subsequent project meetings depend on the availability of film-industry professionals connected with the given title.

“Terrible Consequences of a Television Breakdown” (original title: Ecce Homo Homolka) and “Rejs” are the October selections. The invited guest will be Maciej Łuczak.

Terrible Consequences of a Television Breakdown (directed by Jaroslav Papoušek) is the first part of a grotesque trilogy about the adventures of the Prague Homolka family. The idyll of a May holiday spent in the forest outside Prague is interrupted by cries for help, which immediately drive the crowd out of the forest. At home, the multigenerational family suffocates, forced to rely solely on one another. The broken television is the final straw, leading to a gigantic quarrel in which everyone vents their grievances. Like the trilogy as a whole, the film achieved cult status and has been compared—with regard to the creators’ sense of humor and insight—to Marek Piwowski’s “Rejs”.
