The Pro Musica Girls’ Choir, having won an international competition in the year it was founded, is regarded as one of the world’s leading vocal ensembles. As ambassadors of the success of the Kodály method who appear around the world, the choir members perform not only at concerts but also as part of lectures and master classes on music education. The enthusiasm and experience gained by former students in the Cantemus children’s choir, operating at the Zoltán Kodály Primary School in Nyíregyháza, led to the founding of the Pro Musica ensemble in 1986. Since then, it has won first places and grand prix awards at the most important choir competitions.
Its greatest success was receiving the European Grand Prix on the 10th anniversary of its existence, winning three gold medals and two Olympic champion titles at the 2nd Choir Olympics held in Busan, South Korea, in 2002, and winning the “Silver Rose Bowl”, the traveling trophy of London’s “Let the Peoples Sing” Choir Competition.
The choir’s repertoire covers a broad range of musical literature: alongside works by Bartók and Kodály, its programme includes outstanding choral works from the Renaissance and Romantic periods, as well as works by contemporary Hungarian composers. The choir’s name is also associated with the world premieres of many works. The joint work of the Pro Musica ensemble and the Cantemus children’s choir was recognized with two important Hungarian awards: the Bartók-Pásztory Award in 1993 and the Distinguished for Hungarian Heritage award in 2004.
