The Polish Air Navigation Services Agency has just announced recruitment for air traffic controllers. It is a highly responsible position (every day, controllers are responsible for the lives of half a million passengers on board aircraft and property worth billions), and consequently a well-paid job. Salaries reach PLN 20,000 a month.
It is therefore no surprise that as many as 1,500 people may apply for the position. However, a maximum of 15 people will get the job—and only after a two-year course.
How do you become a controller?
Applications can be submitted via the website of the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency (the appropriate form must be completed), the only institution in Poland that trains and employs civil air traffic controllers. PAŻP analyzes the applications and contacts selected candidates directly.
Those selected face both tests and job interviews. If they all go well, candidates are invited to take part in a course that lasts approximately two years and—once again—consists of many stages. Afterward, around 60% of a group of 20–25 people remain, meaning a maximum of fifteen. However, anyone who passes all the exams is guaranteed a permanent job.
Who can apply?
To start with, applicants must be at least 18 years old, have at least completed secondary school and be fluent in English. Importantly, future air traffic controllers should be resistant to stress and able to make quick decisions. Analytical thinking, spatial awareness and the ability to work in a team are also essential.
Aviation knowledge is not required at this stage, although, as Mikołaj Karpiński, spokesperson for the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency in Warsaw, says, aviation enthusiasts are often the ones who apply for the job.
