Marzena Waśniewska, the campaign’s initiator and sister of little Mateusz from Tomaszów Bolesławiecki, wrote on Facebook: – I am the sister of a wonderful boy with Down syndrome. He turns 8 on April 25. With your help, we would like to give Mateuszek a present. Mateusz loves opening letters and packages, so we would like to ask you to send Mateuszek a birthday card :)
The response exceeded Mateusz’s family’s wildest expectations. On Sunday, Marzena wrote:
I started the card campaign on March 13, aware that many cards would arrive because I have many friends and good people around me. I had a dream in my head: to reach 50, because 50 cards is already something. […] There aren’t 50 cards—heck, there aren’t even 100... So far, we have received 530 cards! The postman showers us with new ones every day! Thank you!
That same day, she added:
Dear all! It took Mati several hours to open the cards ;) Today he received a large portion of what had arrived. The plan was to give him one box of cards—we had packed 9 :) We were afraid that Mateusz would get bored after opening a dozen or so cards, and we did not want that because we believe that every card is worth his smile ;) However, he did not want to give up; despite being tired, he enthusiastically opened more packages. His euphoria was so great, and his dedication to opening them was so strong—we opened 7 boxes.
