In a resolution adopted by the City Council in connection with the government’s education reform, the new Primary School No. 2 (which will comprise the existing six-grade Primary School No. 2, as well as two middle schools: “No. 3” and “No. 2”) was named after St. John Paul II. This was not accidental—the current Middle School No. 3 is also named after the pope.
The Municipal Office named the new school after the saint at the request of its headteacher. However—as Bolesławiec deputy mayor istotne.pl Kornel Filipowicz explains to the website—when councillors adopted the resolution, regulations concerning the naming of new institutions had not yet entered into force. The superintendent noticed this and... the City had to introduce an amendment.
The result? For now, the new “No. 2” will not bear any name. “We have until the end of November to give it a name that reflects the expectations of the school communities,” explains K. Filipowicz. He adds that John Paul II will probably become the school’s patron after all.
