The removal of trees, shrubs and windthrows from the banks of the Bóbr River—on the stretch between the pedestrian footbridge at Gdańska Street and the railway bridge—was demanded, among others, by councillors of the Bolesławiec City Council. Three years ago, the Regional Water Management Board in Wrocław applied to the mayor of Bolesławiec for permission to remove the trees.
At the time, the RZGW did not have the money to carry out this work, so, as Agnieszka Gergont told the istotne.pl service, Agnieszka Gergont, spokesperson for Bolesławiec City Hall, the Board asked for the permit’s validity period to be extended until 28 February 2017.
“This was very important for ensuring the safety of people, property and structures, because these plants constitute a significant obstacle to the flow of floodwaters,” explains A. Gergont. “The designated area helps convey high water, and the felling will improve the flow of floodwaters. It will also improve the safety of people staying by the river, including anglers, walkers and runners.”
The felling was completed by the end of February, because the breeding season for most bird species begins on 1 March.
