Border Guard officers stopped a passenger Volkswagen for inspection in one of the localities in Jelenia Góra County. Inside the vehicle, they found 300 packs of cigarettes without Polish excise-duty markings. During a search of a private property, the officers also secured loose tobacco and spirits (they were in an outbuilding), while in the residential building they discovered hiding places containing cigarettes of various brands and cut tobacco. What is more, another 1.5 tonnes of tobacco and a machine for producing cut tobacco were found at a different location.
Customs officers from Wałbrzych also joined the operation. The 44-year-old man, the owner of the aforementioned property, was arrested. Two other people were also questioned. The officers secured nearly PLN 38,000 in cash toward a potential fine.
In total, 850,000 cigarettes, more than 1.5 tonnes of tobacco and 55 litres of spirits were seized. The illegal goods were worth more than PLN 1.3 million. The 44-year-old could face up to three years in prison and a heavy fine.
