On Saturday, 11 February, the duty officer at the Liberec Regional Police Headquarters was notified that a passer-by had found the body of a newborn in a rubbish container on Na Bídě Street in Liberec. The Liberec police have been handling the case from the outset. So far, investigators have been unable to determine who abandoned the child. Moreover, because of the location where the newborn was abandoned, investigators do not rule out the possibility that the baby may have come from Poland or Germany.
Police officers from the regional headquarters in Liberec and Wrocław are appealing for contact, particularly from people who walked or drove near the place where the newborn was found on 10–11 February. “Drivers of vehicles equipped with dashcams who have recordings from the location during that period may be able to help with the investigation,” say police officers from Lower Silesia. “The recordings could provide a great deal of information in this case, and for this reason the police are asking that they be shared. Investigators are also asking taxi drivers and public transport drivers in Liberec to come forward and help if they noticed anything unusual or suspicious in the area at that time.
Investigators are also searching for the newborn’s mother. They are looking for a woman who was pregnant and may now have recently given birth and be without her child. It is initially estimated that the pregnancy may have begun in April or May 2016. Police officers are also asking pharmacy employees for help, as an unidentified woman may have tried to buy medication for postpartum complications.
