On Saturday, February 4, the fifth edition of the Open Goju Ryu Karate Wińsko Cup took place, with eight karate practitioners from Klub Top Bolesławiec taking part. The hours-long competition in Wińsko resulted in 10 medals!
The competition was organized primarily for the youngest practitioners of the discipline (ages 6–14). Five events were held: kihon and kata (technical events), as well as kumite and fantom (fighting). An agility obstacle course was an additional event for the youngest competitors. The tournament was attended by 205 competitors from 13 Lower Silesian clubs.
The athletes coached by Roberta Bieliński placed seventh in the overall competition standings, winning two gold medals, one silver and seven bronze medals. In the kihon event, Maciej Graczyk (2007) won a bronze medal.
The next event was fantom, meaning kumite (fighting) in front of a standing bag (a dummy), on which beginner karate practitioners demonstrate fighting techniques. We won four medals in this event:
- gold for Maciej Graczyk (2007)
- bronze for Filip Matusiewicz (2007), Jakub Kasprzyk (2007) and Filip Dudyński (2009).
Kata, meaning karate patterns, brought a bronze medal for Marcin Żebrowski (2005). At the end of the tournament came kumite, which provides the most sporting excitement for both competitors and spectators. Maciej Graczyk stood on the top step of the podium for the second time that day in the under-35 kg category (2007); Marcin Żebrowski won silver in the over-42 kg category (2005), while the bronze medals went to: Adam Rosiński in the over-42 kg category (2005) and Michał Bieliński in the under-42 kg category (2004).
In the individual medal standings, Maciej Graczyk—with two gold medals and one bronze—placed fifth among the 205 competitors taking part in the tournament! The team's unluckiest competitor was Wiktor Małkowski, who tore ankle ligaments just before his bout. Unfortunately, the injury prevented him from competing in the tournament.
