Our reader Martyna told us about a homeless man living at an allotment garden by the Bóbr River. She described Mr Jurek’s troubles on the forum.

Hello, I would like to ask for help on behalf of Mr Jurek. Mr Jurek is an elderly, very kind man and, despite having so little himself, he often helps others selflessly. He is homeless (he lives in an old gazebo at an allotment garden), but until now he had somehow managed. He helped everyone in the neighborhood, whether with work at the allotment gardens, minor repairs, or taking away unwanted items. Unfortunately, some gang [...] completely robbed his gazebo! They stole the tools he used to earn a few pennies, a gas cylinder and burner, and even his bedding and canned food. I am not asking for money, but for items that may be lying unused in your homes or cellars and that will certainly help Mr Jurek.

Just three hours after Martyna published a request for help on our forum, Mr Jurek received the first support from kind people who appeared immediately despite the cold.

Hello, there was—and still is—a huge response. I posted the announcement at around 8:00 p.m., and the first parcel reached Mr Jurek at 11:00 p.m. A married couple contacted me, wanting to help; we quickly agreed on everything, and they immediately came to Bolesławiec from Lubań. They brought blankets, clothes, shoes, food and a few other things. They arrived really quickly despite the night, bad weather and even brought their child with them. Overall, I received so many messages that I could not keep up with replying. I finished replying at around 1:00 a.m., and by 7:00 in the morning I was already receiving new ones. Mr Jurek received the second parcel from a couple from Bolesławice. Mr Jurek is so happy that there are no words.

Unfortunately, the gazebo burned down late this afternoon. The Reader described it as follows.

Yes, that is the gazebo. At 2:00 p.m., I was there with a friend and the couple from Bolesławice to unload things for Mr Jurek. We waited fifteen minutes for him because he was returning from a friend’s place. During that time, several people were hanging around and saw us unloading the items. And a few hours later, the gazebo was burning like a torch..."
