The Lubin District Prosecutor’s Office filed an indictment with the Regional Court in Legnica in December against 47-year-old Kazimierz K., who stormed into a supermarket in Ścinawa with an axe and a knife on September 22. First, the man smashed the store’s window with an axe, causing losses of more than PLN 3,500. He then entered through the open door carrying the axe and knife. At the management’s instruction, customers present in the supermarket began fleeing through the back exit. When the cashier and other employees saw the defendant equipped with dangerous tools, they also fled.

At that point, one of the employees ordered Kazimierz K. to throw down the axe. The defendant did indeed leave the axe at the vegetable stand and, holding the knife in his hand, headed toward the alcohol section. There, he took two bottles of cheap wine from the shelf and drank them on the spot.

The store employees notified the police about the incident. Officers arrested K. The man pleaded guilty. He had no previous criminal record.

During the investigation, the prosecutor developed reasonable doubts about the defendant’s sanity at the time of the alleged offenses. Two experts concluded that, at the time, K. had a limited ability to understand the significance of his actions and control his conduct.

The defendant has been held in pretrial detention since September 22. He could face up to 15 years in prison.
