There is no value more precious than HUMAN HEALTH, nor is there a more beautiful initiative than the GIFT OF THE HEART campaign, in which the residents of the town on the Bóbr River broke all records for generosity. Let us recall only the most important facts: – we raised nearly 800 million old złotys (!!!) to purchase a HEART ULTRASOUND MACHINE for the District Hospital; – we purchased a SURGICAL SET for the needs of the Otolaryngology Department, at a cost of more than 250 million złotys.
There were several million złotys left in the account of the SOCIAL COMMITTEE FOR THE PURCHASE OF MEDICAL EQUIPMENT, operating within the BOLESŁAWIEC ENTHUSIASTS' SOCIETY, after the costs had been settled. This prompted the activists to organize another fundraising campaign, this time for a LAPAROSCOPE—a diagnostic and surgical device enabling the detection (including the identification) of tumors and the performance of nearly painless operations on the abdominal cavity.
Such equipment is already used throughout the civilized world. A LAPAROSCOPE is not a cheap device, however: today it costs 1.2 to 1.3 billion old złotys, depending on the type of equipment. The community account has already accumulated 400 million złotys. The Provincial Physician has undertaken to contribute one-third of the device's value, so in practice 400–500 million złotys are still needed. Is this within the financial capabilities of the local community? We must be optimistic, because the effort is worthwhile: we will all benefit from it; a laparoscope is simply essential today!
Dr Stanisław SZCZEPAŃSKI presented the offers from the Medical Equipment Fair to the members of the City Board. A decision was made to support the TMB community initiative. As in previous years, we count on the generosity of school students, employees of industrial plants, businesses and institutions, the heads of trading companies and corporations, the directors of insurance companies and banks, and all people of good will. We will record every act of generosity and every impulse of the heart in the pages of "Głos Bolesławca."
