We asked Agnieszka Gergont why officials, including herself, are prohibited from appearing on camera for Istotne Informacje. Her response suggests that officials are unable to reliably present the Office’s position verbally.

Here is the correspondence between editor Krzysztof Gwizdała (KG) and spokesperson Agnieszka Gergont (AG):

KG: Why are officials working at Bolesławiec City Hall and the press spokesperson not allowed to appear on camera for Istotne Informacje?
AG: The decision to provide written answers to questions from the “Istotne Informacje” editorial office is intended to ensure a reliable presentation of content from Bolesławiec City Hall.

KG: Why does the ban apply exclusively to Istotne Informacje and not to other media outlets?
AG: The editorial office receives written responses so that the audience of “Istotne Informacje” can learn the true meaning of the information provided.

KG: When was the ban introduced, and what are the reasons for it?
AG: The written-response format used since August this year is intended to improve the process of public communication.

The ban was introduced after a report concerning a blues-rock concert, in which the mayor’s carelessness came to light. No one at City Hall is now permitted to speak directly into our microphone. The mayor himself even refuses, apparently afraid that he cannot defend his position directly. He needs a written statement, time to think, and a group of consultants.

In a democracy, people expect a politician to be able to deal with the reality at hand, rather than hide behind a desk and paperwork. The Istotne Informacje portal wants to conduct a direct interview with the mayor about the scandal and failure surrounding the organization of the blues-rock concert. Do you agree, Mr. Mayor? All you have to do is say so.
