1. Establishment of the parishFrom 1945, the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary was served by the parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Until 1965, services were held only twice a year, at Easter and Christmas; later, they were held once a month, made possible through the ministry of Rev. Andrzej Jankowski, chaplain to the Adoratrices Sisters in Bolesławiec. Finally, on 28 August 1966, an independent pastoral center was established at the church, entrusted to Rev. Władysław Karwacki. It included the part of Bolesławiec located on the left bank of the Bóbr River, as well as the villages of Brzeźnik, Dobra and Mierzwin. In 1976, the pastoral center was elevated to the status of a parish. Later, on 1 December 1987, the localities of Brzeźnik and Mierzwin were separated from the parish of Our Lady of the Rosary, and an independent pastoral center dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Help was established in Brzeźnik. Finally, on 27 June 1994, a group of streets belonging to the so-called Kwiatowe Housing Estate and the village of Dobra were separated from the parish, creating a new parish dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.2. Pastoral activityNaturally, a great deal of time and attention was devoted to so-called traditional pastoral ministry. One of its manifestations was the apostolate of the Word of God. In this respect, particular attention was paid to preaching sermons. Catechetical activities were conducted. Rev. Karwacki taught religion to fifth- through eighth-grade students at the local primary school. He also taught catechism in Mierzwin and Dobra, and worked with young people. One of the catechists, meanwhile, conducted classes for preschool children and first- through fourth-grade students. Annual Lenten retreats, emphasis on Advent, holy missions and their renewal provided the entire community with opportunities for spiritual exercises and inner growth. Promoting the Catholic press was also a form of the apostolate of the Word.Administration of the sacraments and liturgical services throughout the church year were also of great importance in the parish of Our Lady of the Rosary. For example, in 1989, 51 baptisms were administered, 55 children received First Holy Communion, approximately 35,000 Communions were distributed during the year, 10 couples were blessed in marriage, and 16 people were accompanied to their final resting place. Every five years, during a canonical visitation of the parish, the bishop confirmed approximately 200 people. Seminarians, first from Wrocław and from 1992 onward from Legnica, completed diaconal placements and later, after ordination, celebrated their first Masses. In the parish, alongside traditional sacramental ministry and the proclamation of the Word of God, particular attention was devoted to devotion to the patroness of the church and parish. This was expressed through the solemn celebration of the patronal indulgence and other Marian feasts, the peregrination of the Marian image, and special emphasis on the Rosary. Pilgrimages were organized to Jasna Góra and other Marian sanctuaries in Poland and abroad.3. Renovation of sacred buildings and construction work at parish facilities.Parishioners, most of whom came from Poland’s eastern borderlands and the former Yugoslavia, integrated very quickly with their pastor and church, undertaking extensive renovation and construction of parish facilities. From 1966 to 1968, major renovations were carried out, with great dedication, at the churches of Our Lady of the Rosary in Bolesławiec and in Brzeźnik. The Mass chapel in Mierzwin was subsequently restored, culminating in its solemn consecration on 14 September 1971. Then, from 1971 to 1974, a new presbytery was built on Ptasia Street. The following years were also marked by construction work. In 1979, the church wall and stone steps in Bolesławiec were repaired. In 1980, work was carried out on the façades of the churches in Bolesławiec and Brzeźnik. On 30 June 1985, construction began on the presbytery in Brzeźnik, which contributed to the establishment there in 1987 of an independent pastoral center, whose first administrator was Rev. Piotr Kudokas, M.A. In 1988, a grotto dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima was built on parish grounds. The following year brought further work at the parish church. The electrical system was renovated, the church was painted, and the paintings, altar, pulpit, pews, sacristy and catechetical room were conserved. Naturally, it is impossible to list all the work in such a short article. It should also be mentioned that, thanks to the generosity and commitment of the faithful, a new organ was installed in the parish church in 1982. In addition, many liturgical furnishings and items necessary for the proper functioning of the parish were purchased. 4. Social problems and forthcoming anniversaries. The changes taking place in our country since 1981 also had a strong impact on the parish discussed here. The faithful experienced very deeply the renewal initiated by the Independent Self-Governing Trade Union “Solidarity.” They received the imposition of martial law and the deepening economic crisis with dismay. Later, they took part hopefully in the democratic elections to the Sejm and Senate. The visits of Pope John Paul II to his homeland were also important to them. At present, the parishioners are gradually preparing for the 30th anniversary of the activity of their pastoral center and of the ministry of Rev. Canon Władysław Karwacki. These anniversaries will be celebrated in 1996. Prepared by: Rev.
