Last summer, the entire gynecology and obstetrics ward of our hospital in Bolesławiec was renovated. On that occasion, a room—which until then had housed women after childbirth—was set aside with the intention of creating a separate, special operating room for Caesarean sections.
A Caesarean section is an obstetric operation performed in certain complications of childbirth, such as abnormal fetal position, placenta previa or a threat to the child’s life. It involves removing the fetus from the uterus after first making incisions in the abdominal wall and the uterine wall.
Until now, Caesarean sections at our hospital had been performed in the operating theatre, which was not the best solution. As a special operation as a result of which a young person comes into the world, it should take place in a location intended solely for this purpose. The newly created Caesarean section room is adjacent to the neonatal ward. This is very beneficial for both the mother and the child. The woman does not have to be transported from the ward to the operating theatre, and the child is already close to the ward from here—the longer the route, the greater the risk of infection entering the body.
Although the room had been ready since the summer, financial difficulties made it hard to assemble the necessary equipment. However, thanks to our City Hall, the room was equipped with the necessary operating table and lamp. The first Caesarean section in our room was performed on 29 November 1994—at 10:35 a.m., a beautiful, healthy girl was born.
To date, eleven babies have been born here.
