Children, starting as early as the third grade, and young people from our town can demonstrate their interest in mathematics by participating in various mathematics competitions. Winners of laureate diplomas can expect to receive the top grade in mathematics.
The International Mathematics Competition “Kangaroo” was very popular; it was being held in Poland for the third time. The competition took place on 10 May 1994, with approximately 250 students from our town participating in various age groups—from the third grade of primary school to the second grade of secondary school.
The best participants received prizes and scholarships ranging from 5 million to 1 million, a camp in Zakopane, or one-time payments of 0.5 million zł.
Of the 18,289 students competing in the district (twenty voivodeships), the following students from our town received prizes: JAKUB PIANKA SP 6 – grade III (teacher DANUTA DERESZYŃSKA), AGNIESZKA ASTACHOWICZ SP 4 – grade IV and ANNA ŻABSKA SP 4 – grade IV (STEFANIA KOWALCZUK), ARTUR PIENIĄDZ SP 5 – grade IV (MARIA SUBIK), PIOTR KOZIOŁ SP 4 – grade VIII (ANNA HIL), MARCIN GÓRZYŃSKI and JAKUB ŻURALSKI I LO – grade I. Students want to participate in competitions—even paid ones; this is evidenced by the fact that the competition fee of 40,000 zł did not discourage participants in “KANGAROO.” Students from our town can still enter several competitions.
At Primary School No. 1, thanks to the great commitment of headmaster Jerzy Janowicz, a competition for sixth-grade students has been organized for three years (the best fifth-grade students may also participate). This year, the competition committee qualified 59 students for the final. The students prepared for several months by solving qualifying tasks.
The students received diplomas and book prizes in the following order: SEBASTIAN STĘPNIAK SP 10 (teacher HALINA BRANDES), WOJCIECH JUSZCZAK SP 2 (JADWIGA FATYGA), KATARZYNA PAWICKA SP 2 Lwówek Śl. (JUSTYNA WRZESIŃSKA), JUSTYNA MARUT SP 6 (ZDZISŁAWA HRYNIEWICZ), MARTA ŚMIETANKA SP 5 (MARIA SUBIK), GERARD AUGUSTYN SP 6 (ZDZISŁAWA HRYNIEWICZ), MARCIN MARCZEWSKI SP 5 (MARIA SUBIK), TOMASZ SOBCZAK SP 1 (ALINA PILIPCZAK), EWELINA MAGIEREWICZ SP NOWOGRODZIEC (BARBARA BURNIAK).
At the initiative of teacher Zdzisława Hryniewicz from Primary School No. 6 in Bolesławiec, a meeting of the best fourth-grade mathematicians was held for the second time. On 14 May 1994, the students solved problems individually and in teams and took part in sports-and-mathematics contests entitled “Through Entertainment to Knowledge.”
It turned out that the best participants in the individual competition were the following students: I Marta Malinowska SP 6 (teacher Iwona Wiatrowska), II Ewa Maczkowiak, and III Dagmara Gruszecka SP 4 (Stefania Kowalczuk), Michał Roztoczyński SP 2 (Kazimiera Ćwiek), Agnieszka Ostachowicz SP 4 (Stefania Kowalczuk), Łukasz Kryszczak SP 8 (Krystyna Młynicka), Sławomir Urban SP Nowogrodziec (Alina Tomczuk), Grzegorz Boba SP 6 (Zdzisława Hryniewicz), Stella Chrzanowska SP 1 (Roman Komosz).
In the team competition, first place was taken by Primary School No. 5 in Bolesławiec.
The Municipal Office in Bolesławiec and the Commune Office in Bolesławiec allocated funds for organizing competitions for sixth- and fourth-grade students and for prizes. We sincerely thank them.
Each year, seventh- and eighth-grade students can take part in the multi-stage Mathematics Competition organized by WOM in Jelenia Góra. Participation in the third stage of this competition exempts a student from the entrance examination in mathematics for secondary school, while a laureate diploma entitles the student to a place in any secondary school.
This year, the best participant in the above competition in the entire voivodeship was Piotr Kozioł from Bolesławiec’s Primary School No. 4, whose supervisor is Anna Hil.
Second-year secondary-school students competed in the Voivodeship Competition in Jelenia Góra. The best student from our town, Jakub Żuralski (I LO), took fifth place. He is a first-year student in the mathematics-and-physics class.
Secondary-school students can also compete in the National Mathematics Olympiad. Paweł Talar, a third-year student in the mathematics-and-physics class at I LO, competed in the second stage of this Olympiad.
It is essential to express our appreciation to the teachers and supervisors who work with gifted students while also serving as members of the Competition Committees.
Dear Colleagues, I sincerely thank you for your additional work and commitment.
